Weekend activities in and around Somerset West
[March 2009]The weather in March is usually great for doing fun outdoor activities, so we decided to compile a list of the Top 10 “swestiest” activities around the Somerset West area. Have a look at our list – maybe this is the perfect opportunity for you to try something new! It might also be a great idea to keep our list in mind for the upcoming school holidays and long weekends!
1. Horse Riding
If this is something you have always wanted to try, have a look at our other feature article this month on horse riding at Mount Rozier. This is the perfect place for people of all ages and horse riding abilities to enjoy the company of horses.
2. Hiking
Somerset West is situated in an area with so much natural beauty – what better way to spend your weekends than enjoying nature! If you enjoy hiking, you will love the hiking trials through the fynbos in the Helderberg Nature Reserve. There are also some lovely hiking trials on Helderberg Farm.
3. Cycling and/or Mountain Biking
There are plenty of places to cycle if you prefer enjoying the beautiful surroundings on your bicycle. There are some awesome mountain biking trails on Helderberg Farm as well.
4. WaterskiingDid you know that you can go cable waterskiing right here in Somerset West? This cable water-ski uses an overhead cable system with an electric motor which pulls users around the lake. The lake at Blue Rock is according to the international standards for Olympic use.
5. Quad biking
Kamazoo Quad offers guided quad bike tours in the vine yards near Somerset West and in the forests and mountains near Grabouw. This is a great way to escape to the great outdoors! The trails run through forests and mountains with some of the most fantastic scenery anywhere.
6. Paintball
Paintball is great fun for the whole family and friends – why not give it a try at S.W.A.T. Paintball!
7. Bowling
For those days when the weather is not quite playing along, there are activities that can be done inside. How about trying out your bowling skills at Let’s Go Bowling in the Somerset Mall?
8. Surfing
Somerset West is only 10 minutes away from the Strand Beach, so how about enjoying the last summer days with some fun beach activities?
You’re never too old or too young to try surfing! If you’ve always wanted to give it a try, why not take a few lessons to learn the basic techniques and make surfing easy! You can take surfing lessons at the Strand Son Surf Club – they meet at the Strand Surf Club on Strand Beach.
9. Kite Surfing
Have you ever wondered what it is like to kitesurf? Well, why don’t you take a few lessons and try it for yourself? Contact the Strand Kitesurfing School for more information.
10. Wonderful wine and good food
