Master Maths

In 1998, Master Maths released a new computer-based teaching system which was written and created by experienced mathematicians right here in Somerset West. This unique system uses cutting edge computer technology and has no equal worldwide, but computers do not teach mathematics, they merely serve to assist.

We popped down to Master Maths on Lourensford Road to chat to Adrie Schoeman (owner) and Marita van der Poel (manager), who spoke about their love for the children and of course mathematics. Every child is treated with the utmost respect and is accepted as one of their own.

They see their role as an extension to the work covered by a teacher in class. They explained that in the classroom environment the teacher has to work at a certain pace to be able to complete the year curriculum as prescribed by the Education Department. In an ideal world all learners in a class would have the same knowledge and would be at the same level.

However people differ from each other and one finds those learners that struggle to keep up or those who wishes to moves faster than the pace set by the teacher. That is why it is important to them that in their Master Maths centre each individual is allowed to work at their own pace to build a sound foundation in mathematics.

Master Maths keeps a progress report on all their learners in order to monitor their performance and assist in the areas that needs attention. Learners never feel pressured or become dependant on tutors or the system. They encourage independent learning and self-study and share an interest in the child’s wellbeing.

Through patient guidance they slowly rebuild the learners believe that they are capable of mastering the subject and plant the seed of renewed self-esteem that is reflected not only on their improved mathematic results and performance but in their entire school performance as a whole.
