Green wedding ideas

Normally the term “wedding” and “eco” do not go together but international environmental awareness has made this all possible. Swest.info is dedicating 2008 to our social responsibility and what better place to start then your wedding!

Eco-weddings boast simplicity, elegance and lots of personality and this is the perfect combination for any dream wedding.

Let us show you how you can turn your wedding into a ‘green’ event.

Location

It is important to remember that the less your guests travel the smaller your wedding’s carbon dioxide footprint is. Choose a location where your ceremony and/or reception will be outdoors with spectacular views as your backdrop. Nature reserves, parks and botanical gardens are perfect for any outdoor theme and create the opportunity to take wonderful pictures without driving to a picture perfect destination because you’ll already be there.

What about “green” decor?

Ever heard of the term, less is more? Well, when you’re outside use white drapes and table cloths with natural elements such as ivy, pinecones and pebbles to decorate the venue and accommodate the scenery and your colour scheme. A big hug for the environment!

Organic catering

Decide on a caterer that makes use of local, fresh, organic food and free range meats. Another good tip is to avoid hiring too many plates and make the starters in edible holders e.g. prepare butternut soup in a hollow yellow or green pepper to replace bowls. Your guests will love it and there are fewer dishes to wash, saving energy and water.

What’s a wedding without flowers?

Choose a local florist that makes use of organic flowers. Their scent lasts longer and if they are roses their petals are edible which serves as a brilliant idea to add to desserts or the wedding cake. Why not make use of wildflowers? They won’t cost you a cent, and if you add a nice ribbon and cut the stems, they can make quite an impressive bouquet.

Local, Organic Wine and Healthy Drinks

Organic wines tantalises the taste buds especially those who have a negative reaction to sulphur dioxide. Organic wines and other healthy drinks, such as smoothies, freshly squeezed juices are just so delicious you’re guests will soak them up! Visit some of our local organic wine producers to find out more.

Growing gifts

A great idea for eco-friendly favors is to put the "green" theme in your centerpieces. Table decor can take the form of small perennials or baby bushes that can later by planted by your guests. This way your love and relationship will be embedded in the growing trait of the plant which represents prosperity and growth!

Relaxing honeymoons

There are many retreats within South Africa that maintain their establishments with the environment at heart. Your honeymoon can range anything from a wildlife resort, a five start guest retreat or a renowned hotel. Take a look at this honeymoon for something different »
